The Taj Mahal stands as one of the world’s most renowned monuments, gracing the city of Agra in northern India with its presence. It is a mausoleum, which means a building where someone is buried. Shah Jahan, the fifth emperor of the Mughal Empire, constructed the Taj Mahal. He ruled India from 1628 to 1658. He built the Taj Mahal for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631. She was his favorite wife and he was very sad when she died. He decided to make a beautiful and grand building for her tomb. He also planned to make another one for himself next to hers.

Shah Jahan hired many skilled workers, artists, and architects to design and build the Taj Mahal.
